Set in the atmospheric interior of Canterbury Castle BREATH was an intimate, contemplative exploration of the connection between human and non-human worlds.

Combining fire, water, light, sculptural installation, soundscape and video with the extraordinary raw physical performance of Japanese Butoh dance BREATH revealed an essential correspondence between basic elements of life subtle, hidden energies of elemental processes.

Inspired by ancient Japanese Shinto culture and contemporary Butoh BREATH was a collaboration between RED EARTH and Japanese performers Mushimaru Fjieda, Hisako Horikawa and Atsushi Takenouchi.

Everything breathes. Everything is connected through breath

BREATH was an international premiere commissioned by The Canterbury Festival with support from South East Arts, Japan 2001, The Arts Council of England, The Daiwa and Sasakawa Foundations and All Nippon Airlines.
