The Chattri Memorial marks the cremation site of fifty-three Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died in Brighton hospitals during the First World War.
Situated on the South Downs the Chattri is a traditional Indian memorial: a simple open dome, an umbrella (chattri) protecting the spirits of the dead.
Mantras are Sanskrit syllables of power from which all things are created. They emanate from Nada – the primal cosmic sound of creation.
NADA/MANTRA is an activation of the Chattri through voice, music, performance, installation and ritual: the creation of a sacred landscape.
Every day of the week join Red Earth to make this space, and take part in a series of events celebrating the Chattri as a meeting ground between earth and spirit. NADA/MANTRA articulates the Chattri’s implicit message of peace, affirming a spirit of international communication and co-operation between cultures and traditions..
